"GREENACRES is the place to be!"
Greenacres Elementary School was just down the alley from our home and really was a great place. My older brothers and sisters (remember there were nine) instilled some worries in my five-year-old mind, telling me horror stories about kindergarten (which was held in the summer before 1st grade). My mom tried to alleviate the fear and invited me choose fabric for the required 'nap mat' for the daily 15 minute rest. She kept telling me my teacher was nice and assured me that graham crackers and orange punch would be served every day. To my surprise, on my first day I realized that I knew the teacher from church -- it was Mrs. Jensen. Some of my other teachers were Mrs. Asper, Mrs. Brennan, Mrs. Jones who had long hair that was always braided and wrapped around her head like a wreath. I enjoyed her third grade class because she valued music and we were always singing and also had a dance show for our parents. Mrs. Wilson taught fourth and my fifth grade teacher was Mrs. Bassett(She owned two basset hounds and the resemblance between owner and pet was weird.)
The scariest part of elementary school was Mrs. Frazier. She was the principal and everyday she'd walk down the long L-shaped corridor with her high heeled shoes, that were so big that they would slide up and down on her feet. The clomping/slide sound echoed in warning as she trekked down the hall. To our dismay, our family had a few accidents at the school. We enjoyed playing there, since it was so near, and we broke a few windows over the years. I always dreaded telling her. Mr. Lincoln was the principal before her and much more understanding of these things. He always appreciated our honesty in telling him what happened and was grateful for our willingness to pay for the damage.
One thing I never understood was why the school adopted the mustang mascot. Anyone who knows anything knows -- it should have been a pig! http://www.maggiore.net/greenacres/gacast.asp
